In the age of streaming, we believe that it’s more important than ever to hold on to what has always made going to the movies so special. The Journey of Mareeba Drive-In Theatre
The Mareeba Rodeo Drive-In first opened its doors over 60 years ago, in 1962. It was initially owned by Far Northern Theatres, a company that operated a circuit of theatres that extended across northern Queensland and into Papua New Guinea.
In 1972, Birch Carroll & Coyle acquired the entire Far Northern Theatres drive-in circuit but withdrew from the market just eight years later. That prompted Norm Janke to take up the Rodeo Drive-In mantle, which he lovingly managed until it finally shut its doors for good in 1998… or so people thought. In 2002, Sam Torrisi came along and completely revitalised the theatre into a 300-car-strong movie experience. By 2013, it successfully transitioned from traditional film to digital screenings.
These days, the venue – now known as the Mareeba Drive-In – is operated by movie-loving siblings, Craig Torrisi and Ann-Marie Donnelly. Since the first day they took over, Craig and Ann-Marie have been fully committed to not only keeping the drive-in flame alive but also supporting the community around them. In an era where streaming is king, each and every visit to Mareeba Drive-In keeps the nostalgia alive. We cannot thank you enough for supporting our small, locally owned business and allowing us to do what we love most – sharing big-screen experiences with fellow film lovers.
